imageThe right stuff to get your letters answered

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive, particularly by email, is "How can I be sure my question will be answered"?

Because Creative Space is read in many cities across North America, you could well imagine the number of questions I receive on a monthly basis. Often, there will be two or three problem rooms that are remarkably similar, so I will pick one of those and try to answer all three together.

But more often than not, your letters are unique, so I am forced to choose between the ones that provide me with the most information.

The most important for me is a detailed floor plan that gives me all the dimensions I need to work out the basic shell of your problem room. It doesn't have to be pretty, just fairly accurate, and the more information on the plan, the better.

The more written information you give me, the better I can answer the query. Questions like: Who lives with you? What do you do in this space? How do you want to use this space? What is the solar exposure and What existing furniture do you have? all give me the ammunition to battle your decorating dilemmas.

Pictures help me to get a stronger visual on the space, but they are not absolutely necessary.

And finally, I really enjoy knowing where you are (so do my editors!). Please be sure to included your name and city in all correspondance.

I look forward to getting your letters. Feel free at any time to let us know what you think.

All comments and constructive criticism are welcome.

I hope I can help you realize your Creative Space.

A large bay window has a commanding presence

Question

My husband and I live in an older home with a fairly spacious living room.
The problem we have always encountered when arranging the furniture here is that the room has a large opening or feature on every wall, and that makes it extremely difficult to decide how to place the furniture.
Because of these openings, I have always found that the only arrangement that works has the seating pieces too far apart.
I would like to group the furniture near the fireplace, but I am not sure it will look very good and perhaps feel crowded.
This is traditionally a formal room used primarily for entertaining and reading.
We have an upright piano that should stay where it is but other than that, I am open to any ideas you may have.
Since I need to buy a new sofa, I am pretty flexible with regard to the style and size, but the off-white wall-to-wall carpet will be staying.
